What IS IT?

Skin pigmentation, also known as hyperpigmentation, is the darkening of a section of the skin normally caused by an over-production of melanin in the skin. Factors such as hormones, overexposure to the sun, pregnancy, ingesting photosensitive medication and genetics can all contribute to the development of skin pigmentation.

People that have extremely overactive melanocytes (melanin cells) or simply a high concentration of melanocytes may suffer from hyperpigmentation. Anyone can be susceptible to skin pigmentation but it is more common with a darker skin type because they have a higher concentration of melanocytes than lighter skin types. There are various forms of skin pigmentation such as freckles, lentigines (beauty spots) and melisma (pregnancy mask).
