What is it?

Acne can be an embarrassing and frustrating skin disorder to deal with, but even once acne is cleared, the subject can often be left with acne scars as a reminder afterward. Acne scars are caused by tissue damage marks that occur after an acne lesion of a pimple, blackhead or cyst has healed, a mark is left behind which can be permanent if not treated.

Acne, which is an inflammation-driven skin disorder, can lead to acne scars forming on the skin when the inflammation leads to tissue damage. The inflammation is result of an infection in the pores clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. Follicle walls affected by inflammation results in the skin healing itself and this repaired skin is usually not as uniform as the surrounding skin.

Just as there are different forms of acne, there are different types of acne scarring and different scars respond differently to treatments. Proper identification of the type of damage is a crucial step in the process in treatment. Treatment should only occur once the acne which caused the scarring is cleared, this is to prevent spreading of any infection or causing further inflammation.
